Several phenomena in Mathematical Physics can be formulated as problems of finding the minimum of a real-valued functional in an appropriate class of functions. In these lectures an elementary introduction to the classical Calculus of Variations is presented. The main topics concern Euler’s equation, Jacobi’s equation, techniques for the study of local minimizers, semicontinuity and compactness. The treatment is generally limited to one-dimensional integrals dependent on a single real-valued function, under simple boundary conditions and with regular integrand function.
